Stone Age Numinosity
Numen is a Latin word, deriving from the verb
nuere, meaning "to nod." It's original meaning
was "a nod." It came to "divine will or divine
power of the gods" from the Greek and Roman
practice of going to the temple to consult the
will of the gods. In the temple, the supplicant
stood before a statue of the god, ask the god for
guidance and then watch the statue. If the statue                          seemed to nod, the believer knew which path to
           take.
